ON SHEEP, WOLVES, AND SHEEPDOGS

This was sent to us via email and we felt it was worth sharing with you. Enjoy.

Honor never grows old, and honor rejoices the heart of age. It does so because honor is, finally, about defending those noble and worthy things that deserve defending, even if it comes at a high cost. In our time, that may mean social disapproval, public scorn, hardship, persecution, or as always, even death itself. The question remains: What is worth defending? What is worth dying for? What is worth living for? - William J. Bennett - in a lecture to the United States Naval Academy November 24, 1997

IDPA Safety Officer Cert

Please note the following announcement from IDPA Safety Officer Certification Instructor Terry Veldboom:

"I will be offering a Safety Officer certification class April 24, 2010 at the Rifle Hampton Inn room 127 starting @ 9AM to 5PM. First 6 hours classroom followed by 50 question test. 74% is required to pass the test. Know your rule book before you come. That will allow me to spend more time teaching practical SO technique & less time teaching what you already have. Current IDPA card & rule book required that day. $100 fee included lunch (pizza) & drinks. 3-5PM range session to follow. This is a minimum amount of time required by IDPA, not my idea. RSVP will be required. A registration # will be issued. Payment will be the day of the class."

PERSONAL FIREARMS RECORD

Each year, thousands of firearms are reported lost or stolen. The owners’ ability to adequately identify these firearms is central to law enforcement’s ability to investigate these crimes and losses. Insurance claims and reacquisition of recovered firearms will also hinge on the ability to correctly identify these firearms.

By keeping a personal firearm record and maintaining it in a safe location, separate from your firearms, you will be taking an important first step in the effort to prevent thefts and to keep firearms out of the hands of criminals.

PISTOL GRIPS & SHOTGUNS

The definition of a shotgun under the GCA, 18 U.S.C. § 921(a)(5), is “a weapon designed or redesigned, made or remade, and intended to be fired from the shoulder and designed or redesigned and made or remade to use the energy of an explosives to fire through a smooth bore either a number of ball shot or single projectile for each single pull of the trigger. Under the GCA, 18 U.S.C. § 921(a)(29)(A), handgun means “a firearm which has a short stock and is designed to be held and fired by the use of a single hand.” Federal law provides under 18 U.S.C. 922(b)(1), that if the firearm to be transferred is “other than a rifle or shotgun,” the purchaser must be 21 years of age or older.

Certain commercially produced firearms do not fall within the definition of shotgun under the GCA even though they utilize a shotgun shell for ammunition. For example, firearms that come equipped with a pistol grip in place of the buttstock are not shotguns as defined by the GCA.
